Compassion
Fatigue
Symptoms: having
difficulty going to sleep and or waking up thinking about
the story, nightmares, avoidance of stimuli or person that
reminds you of the trauma, feeling estranged and disconnected
from others people and activities that use to feel meaningful,
anger, fear, burnout, conflict with others that do not understand,
intense grief, and feelings of inadequacy.
Trauma
- Trauma heightens
our sense of personal vulnerability
- Challenges
our basic faith and belief systems.
- Psychological
foundation of safety/meaningful existence altered.
- Trauma can
initially create a frozen response of shock, numbness
and denial.
- Flood gates
thaw - hijacked by emotional release of anger, anxiety,
depression and or grief.
What to do:
1. Know that compassion fatigue exists and is normal.
2. Anyone exposed to people that have been traumatized should
not work alone.
3. Scheduling regular ongoing support activities - training,
consultation and support groups.
4. Take an active role in making your work more effective,
meaningful and creative.
5. Often, re-igniting the passion helps nurture the soul
which provides healing on all levels.
